Cephalexin (famously known as Keflex), belonging to the cephalosporin family, is an antibiotic which is prescribed to treat infections caused by bacteria in the respiratory tract, urinary tract (UTI), middle ear, bone and skin infections. For sinus infections Cephalexin (Keflex) isn't prescribed. Cephalexin (Keflex) is also used to prevent infections caused by streptococcal bacteria, including rheumatic fever.

Cephalexin (Cephadex) was one of the first cephalosporin to be developed and marketed therefore it is sometimes referred as first generation cephalosporin. Cephalexin (Cephadex) and the cephalosporin antibiotics are also known as broad spectrum antibiotics as they are prescribed to treat wide range of infections caused by several different bacteria.

Cephalexin (Cephadex) doesn't work for viral infections (eg: flu, common cold). Treating these with broad spectrum antibiotics may lead to antibiotic resistance then treating more severe infections become much harder.

What is Cephalexin (Cephadex)?

It kills gram-positive and some gram-negative bacteria by disrupting the growth of the bacterial cell wall. This medication is known as a cephalosporin antibiotic. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This medication will not work for viral infections (such as common cold, flu).
