Clindamycin (Generic Cleocin) is an antibiotic which is prescribed to treat bacterial infections such as acne and bacterial vaginosis. Clindamycin (Generic Cleocin) works by inhibiting the growth of bacteria. For sinus infections Clindamycin (Generic Cleocin) isn't prescribed. Comes in 150 mg and 300 mg dosages.

Clindamycin (Generic Cleocin) doesn't work for viral infections (eg: flu, common cold). Treating these with broad spectrum antibiotics may lead to antibiotic resistance then treating more severe infections become much harder.

What is Clindamycin?

Clindamycin is used to treat certain types of bacterial infections, including infections of the lungs, skin, blood, female reproductive organs, and internal organs. Clindamycin is in a class of medications called lincomycin antibiotics. It works by slowing or stopping the growth of bacteria.

Antibiotics such as clindamycin will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Using antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.

Clindamycin should be used only for infections that cannot be treated with a safer antibiotic.

Recommendations for use of Clindamycin

Clindamycin is used to treat acne and is used along with other medications to treat anthrax and malaria.

Clindamycin is also sometimes used to treat ear infections, tonsillitis (infection that causes swelling of the tonsils), pharyngitis (infection that causes swelling in the back of the throat), and toxoplasmosis (an infection that may cause serious problems in people who do not have healthy immune systems or in unborn babies whose mothers are infected) when these conditions cannot be treated with other medications.

Clindamycin is also used to treat bacterial vaginosis (an infection caused from too much of certain bacteria in the vagina).

Clindamycin is also used to prevent endocarditis (infection of the heart valves) in certain people who are at risk of developing this infection as a result of a dental procedure.

Dosage and direction of taking Clindamycin 400mg

Read the Medication Guide and the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist before you start using Clindamycin and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Take Cindamycin capsule orally as prescribed by your doctor with a full glass of water with or without food. Usually it is prescribed four times a day (every 6 hours). You shouldn't lie down at least till 10 minutes after taking this medication.

Swallow the whole capsule without chewing or splitting or crushing it. There is a bitter taste if you crush Clindamycin. Increase the amount of fluids taken unless the doctor advised otherwise

Always try to take Cindamycin at evenly paced times. If you missed a dose take it as soon as you remember. If it is too close to your next dose then skip the missed dose and take the regular dose. Should never double the dose in order to make up for the missed dose.

This is an antibiotic which needs to complete the fully prescribed amount, even if the symptoms improve after a few doses. The bacteria may continue to grow if you stop the medication early resulting in a return of the infection.

Take Cindamycin exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take in doses which are either larger or for longer than what is recommended by your doctor.

You should begin to feel better during the first few days of treatment with Clindamycin. If your symptoms do not improve or get worse, call your doctor.

Continue to take Clindamycin even if you feel better. If you stop taking Clindamycin too soon or skip doses, your infection may not be completely treated and the bacteria may become resistant to antibiotics.

Missed Dose of Clindamycin
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose. Take your next dose at the regular time. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Overdose of Clindamycin
If you think you have taken more than the required dose contact a poison control center or emergency room at once. NOTE: This medicine is only for you. Do not share this medicine with others.
