How to take Fexofenadine?
Ensure to read and understand the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist before you start using Fexofenadine. If there are any doubts ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Take fexofenadine tablet with a glass of water with or without food. Usually it is recommended to take once or twice a day.
To get the most from fexofenadine avoid fruit juices like grape fruit, orange and apple juice.
Swallow the whole tablet without chewing or splitting or crushing it.
Always try to take fexofenadine at evenly paced times. If you missed a dose take it as soon as you remember. If it is too close to your next dose then skip the missed dose and take the regular dose. Should never double the dose in order to make up for the missed dose.
Take fexofenadine exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take in doses which are either larger or for longer than what is recommended by your doctor.
Shake the bottle well if you are using the suspension.
Precautions
Prior to taking Fexofenadine inform your doctor if you have
- any allergies to fexofenadine or other allergies
- kidney disease
- Liver disease
If you are pregnant you must take Fexofenadine only if it's absolutely. Discuss with your doctor the risks and the benefits involved.
Antacids (Mylanta, Maalox, others) containing magnesium and aluminum if you are taking then you need to take them few hours before or after fexofenadine.
Side Effects
Your doctor prescribed this medicine after carefully analyzing the benefits over the risks involved. Most people do not experience any serious side effects. However, you may experience the following side effects.
- diarrhea
- dizziness
- headache
- pain during menstrual period
- cough
- fever
- pain during menstruation
- pain in the legs, back and arms
Inform your doctor immediately if you experience any of the serious side effects mentioned below.
- Interactionsitching
- hives
- difficulty breathing or swallowing
- swelling in the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankle
- rash
- hoarseness
Inform your doctor about any medications that you are taking including prescription medications, over the counter medications, vitamins, supplements and herbal remedies.
During pregnancy must be used if it's absolutely necessary.
Caution should be exercised when prescribing Fexofenadine to a nursing mother.
Antacids should be avoided for an hour before or after taking the dose of Fexofenadine as it can make it hard for the body to absorb the antibiotic Fexofenadine.
Some of the medications that may interact with Fexofenadine is
- ketoconazole (Nizorat)
- erythromycin (E-Mysin, Erythrocin, E.E.S)
- antacids containing aluminum or magnesium
- fruit juice such as grape fruit, orange and apple.
Your dosage can be reduced or adjusted taking into account of the above.
